So today it’s our final day of walking. Time to see what we came for…. Machu Picchu!

As we are with 200 people (remember the previous post?) that want to enter the checkpoint at the same time, and we don’t want to arrive last in the queue, we need to wake up at 4am.

After packing our stuff and a quick breakfast, we take a small walk to the checkpoint, where we arrive… last.

We need to wait 40 minutes in the dark before the check point opens, not the most pleasant experience but hey-ho the reward will be great!

Quindi oggi è il nostro ultimo giorno di cammino. È ora di esplorare la nostra meta…. Machu Picchu!

Siccome siamo 200 persone (ricordate il post precedente?) che vogliono passare il punto di controllo il prima possibile e nessuno vuole arrivare ultimo in coda, dobbiamo svegliarci alle 4 del mattino.

Dopo aver fatto le valigie e una colazione veloce, facciamo una piccola camminata fino al checkpoint, dove arriviamo … ultimi.

Dobbiamo aspettare 40 minuti al buio prima che il punto di controllo si apra, non è un’esperienza piacevolissima ma la ricompensa sarà grandiosa!

Dopo che il punto di controllo si apre, dobbiamo ancora camminare per due ore verso la Porta del Sole (da dove avremo la prima vista sulle rovine di Machu Picchu)

Passiamo delle scale ripidissime da salire arrampicandosi come le scimmie

5 minutes later it looks like this and it would stay like this for the remainder of the day.

5 minuti dopo diventa così e sarebbe rimasto così per il resto della giornata.

Hence dear reader if you ever attempt to go and do this trek in rainy season, run for your life to get to the sun gate (disclaimer: be careful I am not responsible if you slip down the mountain whilst running to the sun gate!)

Going down we find Machu Picchu in the mist, not a bad sight but not as impressive as we imagined.

Quindi, caro lettore, se mai provi ad andare a fare questo trekking nella stagione delle piogge, corri per arrivare in tempo alla Porta del Sole (fai attenzione, non sono responsabile se scivoli giù dalla montagna correndo!)

Scendendo, troviamo Machu Picchu nella nebbia, non una brutta vista ma non così impressionante come immaginavamo.

We make a quick tour through a wet Machu Picchu.

Facciamo un rapido tour attraverso Machu Picchu bagnato.

After which we go down to Aguas Calientes to our hotel. We are both a bit depressed by the bad weather. After a hot shower we go to church for the Christmas mass, eat and sleep early as tomorrow we go back to Machu Picchu, to climb Huayana Picchu.

There are two slots to climb this mountain (7-8 am and 10-11 am) and of course a daily limit of 200 people that can climb the mountain (not necessarily the same that do the Inca trail as tickets are sold separately)

Dopo di che scendiamo ad Aguas Calientes nel nostro hotel. Siamo entrambi un po’ depressi per il maltempo. Dopo una doccia calda andiamo in chiesa per la messa di Natale, mangiamo e andiamo a dormire presto, domani torneremo a Machu Picchu per salire su Huayana Picchu.

Ci sono due slot per scalare questa montagna (7-8 e 10-11) e naturalmente un limite giornaliero di 200 persone che possono scalare la montagna (non necessariamente le stesse che fanno il sentiero Inca in quanto i biglietti sono venduti separatamente)

The next day we get up at 4 am (it is starting to become a habit…) And rush back to Machu Picchu as we have tickets for the 7-8 am slot to climb Huayana Picchu (the big mountain right behind Machu Picchu).

We quickly go to the viewpoint and see the site empty with no tourists!!!As you can see the weather became a lot better! (And no we did not take the two hour climb back to the sun gate!)

We make a small tour through town and find probably one of the most amazing sights of Huayana Picchu through the city gate:

Il giorno dopo ci svegliamo alle 4 del mattino (sta iniziando a diventare un’abitudine …) E torniamo di corsa a Machu Picchu perché abbiamo i biglietti per lo slot 7-8 del mattino per scalare Huayana Picchu (la grande montagna dietro Machu Picchu ).

Andiamo rapidamente al punto di osservazione e vediamo il sito vuoto senza turisti !!! Come puoi vedere il tempo è migliorato molto! (E no, non abbiamo camminato due ore per tornare alla Porta del Sole!)

Facciamo un piccolo tour attraverso la città e troviamo probabilmente una delle viste migliori di Huayana Pichu attraverso la porta della città:

Going up Huayana Pichu is quite a special thing to do, but it is very steep (notice my terrified look)….

Salire su Huayna Picchu è molto speciale, ma la salita è molto ripida (notate il mio sguardo terrorizzato) ….

…but the sights on the top are beautiful!

… ma i panorami in cima sono bellissimi!

Going down the mountain can be done in two ways:

1. Walk down with all the tourists (which leads back to MP)
2. Walk back 20 meter from the summit and take the path marked “great cave” (which is an extra 2 hour walk that leads past… the great cave)

We of course did the extra detour! There is almost no one doing this and the trail leads through real jungle.

Si può scendere la montagna in due modi:

1. Scendere con i turisti (ritornando a Machu Picchu)
2. Tornare indietro 20 metri dalla vetta e prendere il sentiero che porta alla “grande grotta” (che è una camminata di altre 2 ore)

Ovviamente abbiamo fatto la deviazione extra! Non c’è quasi nessuno a fare questo e il sentiero conduce attraverso la vera giungla.

E finalmente arriviamo alla grande grotta, con un ottimo divanetto dove rilassarsi:

After that you will need to walk another hour or so up and down back to Machu Picchu (quite heavy considering the lack of oxygen at 3000+ meters)

The last part we visit is the Inka bridge, this is a bit of a disappointment as it is not really the same way as it used to be (i.e. it was a hanging bridge but has been filled with stones)

Dopodiché dovrai camminare ancora per un’ora su e giù fino a Machu Picchu (abbastanza pesante considerando la mancanza di ossigeno a più di 3000 metri)

L’ultimo sito che visitiamo è il ponte Inka, questo è un po’ una delusione perché non è proprio come prima (era un ponte sospeso ma è stato riempito di pietre)

Machu Picchu is definitely worth a visit, even just to be there and see what you know from the history books/ news papers, in real life.

If going in the rainy season (like we did), you have to be lucky with the weather. It can be good one moment and completely invisible the next.

Huayana Pichu can not be missed on your itinerary. It’s about 50 dollars extra on top of the entrance to MP and you do need to have a good physical condition to climb it but it’s well worth every dollar/drop of sweat!

Ah and last but not least, there are many lamas inside MP if you catch them whilst they are done eating, they are an easy target for a selfie!

Machu Picchu merita sicuramente una visita, anche solo per essere lì e vedere con i tuoi occhi quanto appreso dai libri di storia / giornali.

Se vai nella stagione delle piogge (come abbiamo fatto noi), devi essere fortunato con il tempo. Può essere buono un momento e completamente invisibile il momento successivo.

Huayana Picchu non può mancare nel tuo itinerario. Sono circa 50 dollari in più in aggiunta all’ingresso di Machu Picchu e necessita una buona condizione fisica per arrampicarti, ma vale la pena ogni dollaro / goccia di sudore!

Ah, ultimo ma non meno importante, ci sono molti lama in Machu Picchu e se li becchi mentre hanno finito di mangiare, sono un facile bersaglio per un selfie!
