Today is the day of the Montaña de Siete Colores also known as the Rainbow Mountain 🌈 !

This mountain is located c.3,5 hours drive from Cuzco and is a very colourful mountain more than 5,000 meters high.

It became a popular attraction 3 years ago, when routes were built to facilitate access to it; now it is a 1,5h walk to get to the viewpoint, while in the past it used to be more than 3.

We booked our tour with www.rainbowmountaintravels.com who seem to be one of the best operators in Cuzco. The pick up is at 3-3.30 am at the hotel, followed by a 3.5h drive to the base of the mountain, and a stop for breakfast in between. The base of the mountain is c. 4,700 meters, which means you only have to hike up 400 meters. It does not seem too much, but remember altitude is a real killer.

Anyway, once you arrive at the base of the mountain, you are hit by the dilemma: shall I take the next ride available at the terminal de caballos 🐎 or shall I hike up all the way? The ride by horse costs 60 soles (or 15 pounds) for one way, but it does not take you all the way to the top.

Oggi è il giorno della Montaña de Siete Colores, conosciuta anche come la Montagna Arcobaleno 🌈 !

Questa montagna si trova a circa 3,5 ore d’auto da Cuzco ed è una montagna molto colorata alta oltre 5.000 metri.

E’ un’attrazione popolare da 3 anni, quando furono costruite le strade per facilitarne l’accesso; ora ci vuole un’ora e mezza di cammino per arrivare in cima, mentre in passato ce ne volevano più di 3.

La partenza è alle 3-3.30 di mattina in hotel, seguito da un viaggio di 3,5 ore fino alla base della montagna e una sosta per la colazione. La base della montagna è c. 4.700 metri, il che significa che devi solo salire 400 metri. Non sembra troppo, ma ricorda che l’altitudine non gioca a favore.

Ad ogni modo, una volta arrivato alla base della montagna, sei colpito dal dilemma: prendo il primo passaggio disponibile al terminal de caballos 🐎 o salgo in cima a piedi? La corsa a cavallo costa 60 soles (o 15 sterline) solo andata, ma non ti porta fino in cima.

Some people prefer the horse option. However, fear not! Going with the horse option does not mean that you will be wildly riding the horse up the mountain; an indigenous person from a local community will be in charge of directing the horse along the right path.

Serge and I ventured on foot. The hike is divided in three phases: a short uphill phase which is a test to check the resistance to the altitude (10-15′), a second flatter phase (40′) and a third very painful uphill phase (30′) where you need to make sure – unless you are well trained to cope with very high altitude – to take frequent breaks to catch your breath.

Alcune persone preferiscono l’opzione cavallo. Ma non temere! Andare a cavallo non significa dover guidare da soli il cavallo su per la montagna; una persona locale ti aiuterà a guidare il cavallo per il percorso corretto.

Serge e io siamo andati a piedi. L’ascesa è divisa in tre fasi: una breve fase in salita che è un test per verificare la resistenza all’altitudine (10-15′), una seconda fase più piatta (40′) e una terza fase abbastanza faticosa in salita (30′) dove è necessario accertarsi di fare pause frequenti per riprendere fiato, a meno che non si sia ben allenati per affrontare altitudini elevate.

We have been lucky because, despite the cold and the wind, the weather wasn’t too bad and we could see the mountain nicely.

in case you get bored of taking selfies with the Rainbow Mountain, there is also the option to take a hike to the Red valley. It is not as painful once you have climbed the Rainbow Mountain and is definitely worth it!

Siamo stati fortunati perché, nonostante il freddo e il vento, il tempo non è stato male e abbiamo potuto vedere bene la montagna.

Nel caso in cui fare selfie con la Montagna Arcobaleno ti annoi presto, c’è anche la possibilità di fare una gita nella valle Rossa. Non è così doloroso una volta che hai scalato la Rainbow Mountain e ne vale la pena!

Once we came back from the Red valley, we saw a very long line of people walking/riding up in the direction of the Rainbow Mountain. As every other attraction, it is better enjoyed in solitude, so my recommendation would be to take a tour that starts as early as possible (3am from Cuzco) and beat the crowds. Enjoy the hike!

Una volta tornati dalla valle Rossa, abbiamo visto una fila molto lunga di persone che camminavano verso la Rainbow Mountain. Come ogni altra attrazione, è meglio godersela in solitudine, quindi la mia raccomandazione sarebbe di scegliere un tour che inizi il più presto possibile per battere le folle. Buona camminata!
