If you were thinking that we only went to Santiago for the wine, you were wrong!

Also the “normal” Santiago life is interesting for tourists.

As we only had one day in Santiago we decided to use a guided city tour to get some explanation about the city and what the highlights are.

We found this absolutely fabulous company called www.tours4tips.com. The idea is: they organize a tour and afterwards you decide how much you liked it and give a tip accordingly. All tour guides are dressed in these “where is Waldo” white and red striped shirts, hard to miss!

Se pensi che siamo andati a Santiago solo per il vino, ti sbagli!

Anche la vita “normale” di Santiago è interessante per i turisti.

Dato che abbiamo avuto solo un giorno a Santiago, abbiamo deciso di fare un tour guidato della città per spiegazioni sulla città e monumenti principali.

Abbiamo trovato questa organizzazione molto valida chiamata www.tours4tips.com. L’idea è: fai un tour con loro e in seguito decidi quanto ti è piaciuto e dai un compenso monetario di conseguenza. Tutte le guide sono vestite con t-shirt a righe bianche e rosse, difficili da perdere!

There are two tours per day:

• Highlights tour (all the things you must have seen in Santiago)
• Offbeat tour (all things tourists normally don’t see but that are worth visiting)

We did both tours and started in the early morning with the offbeat tour.

The first stop is Mercado Central

Ci sono due tour al giorno:

• Highlights tour (tutte le cose che devi aver visto a Santiago)
• Offbeat tour (tutto ciò che i turisti normalmente non vedono ma che vale la pena visitare)

Abbiamo fatto entrambe le escursioni e iniziato la mattina presto con il tour offbeat.

La prima tappa è Mercado Central

This is the central fish market where they sell the daily fresh fish. It’s actually quite cheap and they have a restaurant area where you can have some nice fish lunch (unfortunately we did not have time to try this out)

Questo è il mercato centrale del pesce dove vendono il pesce fresco giornaliero. In realtà è abbastanza economico e hanno una zona ristorante dove si può mangiare del buon pesce (purtroppo non abbiamo avuto il tempo di provarlo)

After the central market we go to “La Vega Central“. This is the biggest market in downtown Santiago. Almost everyone in Chile has at least heard about this place. It’s famous for sending out trucks of food to places of crisis (after an earthquake, flood, etc)

As you can see plenty of food and it all looks so good!

Dopo il mercato centrale andiamo a “La Vega Central”. Questo è il più grande mercato nel centro di Santiago. Quasi tutti in Cile hanno almeno sentito parlare di questo posto. È famoso perché tra l’altro invia camion di cibo ai bisognosi nei momenti di crisi (dopo un terremoto, un’inondazione, ecc.)

Come puoi vedere un sacco di cibo e tutto sembra così buono!

And they do very good juices, “Jugos” in Chilean Spanish, refreshing and with no sweetener added!

E fanno ottimi succhi, “Jugos” in spagnolo cileno, rinfrescanti e senza aggiunta di dolcificanti!

After you are done with the fruit and the juices you might want to buy a typical fried bread: sopaipilla, made of pumpkin flour. Fun fact: sopaipilla is a Spanish word derived from the Arabic word “Xopaipa”, meaning bread soaked in oil. In turn this word was derived from the Germanic word “suppa”, which means bread soaked in anything. Now before you think I am a smart linguistic, have a look at Wikipedia

Dopo aver finito con la frutta e i succhi, l’attenzione si sposta sul tipico panzerotto fritto: “sopaipilla”, fatto con farina di zucca. Fatto divertente: sopaipilla è una parola spagnola derivata dalla parola araba “Xopaipa”, che significa pane imbevuto di olio. A sua volta questa parola deriva dalla parola germanica “suppa”, che significa pane imbevuto di qualsiasi cosa. Ora, prima che tu pensi che io sia un linguista sofisticato, dai un’occhiata a Wikipedia

We were amongst the luckiest of people as normally it is sunny in Santiago, but we had that one day of rain in a looooong time!

In the drizzle on to the cemetery. The Santiago cemetery or “Cementerio General de Santiago” is with 85 ha of land and about 2 milion burials one of the biggest cemeteries in Latin America. There are streets in it, just like in cities, with car access.

Founded in 1821 it is now also a social gathering place, it is not uncommon to see people drinking beer next to a grave to celebrate the birthday of a disceased family member/friend or young couples hanging out for their first date (!)

As Chile used to be (and still is) a rich country with a wealth of exportable commodities, you will find amazing graves, for one single person:

Siamo stati super fortunati perché normalmente a Santiago c’è il sole, ma abbiamo avuto l’unico giorno di pioggia dopo mooooolti giorni di bel tempo!

Il cimitero di Santiago o “Cementerio General de Santiago” ha 85 ettari di terreno ed ospita circa 2 milioni di sepolture, ed è uno dei più grandi cimiteri dell’America Latina. Ci sono strade, proprio come nelle città, percorribili in auto.
Fondato nel 1821, ora è anche un luogo di ritrovo sociale, non è raro vedere persone che bevono birra accanto a una tomba per festeggiare il compleanno di un familiare / amico di famiglia o una giovane coppia al loro primo appuntamento (!)

Poiché il Cile era (e ancora è) un paese ricco dovuto alle grandi esportazioni di cibo e minerali, troverai delle tombe meravigliose, anche per una singola persona:

One grave in particular is worth mentioning because of the politically charged history of the body it contains: the grave of Salvador Allende

The history of Allende, his way to rule Chile and the coup d’état with 18 years of dictatorship that followed, are still controversial in Chile. Talking with Chileans, there are many opinions on what’s right and what’s wrong. In case you want to know more about this, there is really no independent link I can give, so probably searching on Google might form your opinion.
