In life there are two certainties: death and tax. How about combining them? Here is: Recoleta. For those fortunate enough to afford it, they can buy a grave (or should we say monument?) in this extravagant graveyard.

Nella vita ci sono due certezze: la morte e le tasse. Che ne dici di combinarle? Ecco: Recoleta. Per chi è abbastanza fortunato da poterselo permettere, può comprare una tomba (o dovremmo dire un monumento?) in questo stravagante cimitero.

The idea of an extravagant graveyard like in Paris (Père Lachaise) was started by Torcuato de Alvear, the then mayor of Buenos Aires. The land on which the cemetery was built was expropriated from the Recoleti monks (who gave it its name) in early 1820s. The oldest grave preserved today dates back to 1825:

There are also abandoned graves, if a grave is not paid for 100 years, it will be up for sale. Small graves (4-5 coffins) cost approx 25k USD, the biggest graves (50 coffins) about 250k USD. The catch is though: you can only refurbish the grave, there can’t be made any changes (except for the family name of course). Since the graveyard has been around for about 200 years there are no new plots of land to design your own grave.

Ci sono anche tombe abbandonate; se una tomba non viene pagata per 100 anni, sarà infatti messa in vendita. Le piccole tombe (4-5 bare) costano circa 25k USD, le tombe più grandi (50 bare) a circa 250k USD. Il problema è che: puoi solo ristrutturare la tomba, non è possibile apportare modifiche (tranne ovviamente il nome della famiglia). Poiché il cimitero esiste da circa 200 anni, ora ci sono nuovi appezzamenti di terreno per progettare la tua tomba.

And the stories, there are many like this girl that was burried by her parents. When the staff of the cemetery came back the next day the coffin was moved from the place they left it. They opened the coffin and discovered that the girl woke up after her burrial and tried to open her grave, instead she suffocated…. (Since then people add bells in the coffin, to be , literally, saved by the bell)

E le storie, ce ne sono molte come questa ragazza che è stata sepolta dai suoi genitori. Quando il personale del cimitero tornò il giorno successivo al funerale, la bara era spostata dal luogo in cui l’avevano lasciata. Aprirono la bara e scoprirono che la ragazza si era svegliata dopo essere stata seppellita e aveva tentato di aprire la sua tomba, e morta di soffocamento… (Da allora le persone aggiungono campane nella bara, per essere, letteralmente, salvate dalla campana)

And this girl that died in an avalanche while skiing in the 1970s. The Gothic style was quite popular at that time. Even her hair has the shape that is typical for the Gothic style (next to her, her dog. Touching his nose supposedly brings you luck)

E questa ragazza che è morta in una valanga mentre sciava negli anni ’70. Lo stile gotico era piuttosto popolare in quel periodo. Anche i suoi capelli hanno la forma che è tipica dello stile gotico (accanto a lei, il suo cane. Toccare il suo naso presumibilmente ti porta fortuna)

And of course, we can’t get around her… Evita Peron is buried here. After her death, due to political reasons, her body made a world tour that even led to Milano. After the fall of the Military regime and Peron’s death, the second wife of Peron was elected president and made every effort to get Evita back in Argentina. Once back home she was put in her family grave (Duarte)

Dopo la caduta del regime militare e la morte di Peron, la seconda moglie di Peron fu eletta presidente e volle riportare Evita in Argentina. Recoleta is definitely an impressive burial ground and in some ways probably even more impressive compared to Père Lachaise.

However sometimes it is also good to remember that those, fortunate enough to be buried in Recoleta are also just skeletons equal to any other, rich or poor.

Tuttavia è bene ricordare che coloro abbastanza fortunati da essere sepolti a Recoleta sono anch’essi scheletri uguali a tutti gli altri, ricchi o poveri.
