Hopping from the Galapagos to Aruba is quite a trip, a layover of 12 hours in Quito. Leaving at 3 am to Colombia, waiting another hour in Bogotá and after 2 more hours of flight…. Aruba!

Passare dalle Galapagos ad Aruba è un bel viaggio, facciamo una sosta di 12 ore a Quito. Partiamo alle 3 del mattino per la Colombia, aspettiamo un’altra ora a Bogotà e dopo altre 2 ore di volo …. Aruba!

Aruba is part of the lower Dutch Antilles (together with Curacao and Bonaire). It’s officially part of the Dutch Kingdom, however it has its own prime minister and cabinet.

The island has about 100.000 inhabitants and the languages spoken are: Dutch, Spanish and the local Papiamento. The only Papiamento words that we remember are “Mi Dushi” (sweetheart) and “Bon Bini” (welcome)…

Aruba fa parte delle Antille olandesi inferiori (insieme a Curacao e Bonaire). È ufficialmente parte del regno olandese, tuttavia ha il suo primo ministro e il suo consiglio dei ministri.

L’isola ha circa 100.000 abitanti e le lingue parlate sono: olandese, spagnolo e il papiamento (creole language with strong Spanish/Portuguese and Dutch influences). Le uniche parole di Papiamento che ricordiamo sono “Mi Dushi” (tesoro) e “Bon Bini” (benvenuto) …

Arriving in the island get the first shock…. A taxi for 4 km to the hotel costs 21 USD (in comparison in Quito, where we just came from, that same amount brought you 40 km far).

We learn soon that everything on the island is expensive. There is not really a casual dinner culture (average dinner price is about 25 USD pp compared to the rest of South America where a menu of the day costs about 5 USD….) and there are many rich Americans that land with big cruise ships on the Island, like the “the symphony of the seas” on below picture (the largest cruise ship in the world)

Arrivando nell’isola abbiamo il primo shock …. Una corsa in taxi di 4 km per l’hotel costa 21 dollari (in confronto a Quito, dove la stessa cifra ti sarebbe stata chiesta per percorrere 40 km).

In linea di massima, tutto sull’isola è costoso. Il prezzo medio di una cena è di circa 25 dollari a persona rispetto al resto del Sud America, dove un menù del giorno costa circa 5 dollari … giustificato dalla presenza di molti ricchi Americani che approdano con una grande crociera sull’Isola, come la “sinfonia dei mari” nell’immagine in basso (la più grande nave da crociera del mondo) e dalla presenza di molti hotel di lusso.

The good thing of everything being expensive is that everything is very well maintained. There is good public transport (Arubus) and the (desalinated) water from the tap is drinkable.

Although there are some authentic parts on the island, part of it (especially around the cruise terminal) feels a bit like Disneyland (see picture below)

La cosa buona è che l’isola è molto ben mantenuta. C’è un buon trasporto pubblico (Arubus) e l’acqua (desalinizzata) dal rubinetto è potabile.

Sebbene ci siano alcune parti autentiche sull’isola, parte di essa (specialmente attorno al terminal delle crociere) sembra un po’ come Disneyland (vedi foto sotto)

Temperature is amazing! Low at 23 degrees and high at 28.

The first beach we visited is Mangel Halto (South East of the island) which has beaches surrounded by mangrove trees. We did a bit of snorkeling but in the bay there was not too much to see.

La temperatura è incredibile! La minima a 23 gradi e massima a 28.

La prima spiaggia che abbiamo visitato è Mangel Halto (a sud est dell’isola) che ha spiagge circondate da alberi di mangrovie. Abbiamo fatto un po’ di snorkeling ma nella baia non c’era molto da vedere.

The next day we make a walk on the beaches in the south and west of the island (Divi beach, Eagle beach). It’s a bit of a short day as we are both a bit tired in the morning.

The beaches do not disappoint! Very white sand and crystal clear water. Oh, and of course the orange dutchies are present:

Il giorno dopo facciamo una passeggiata sulle spiagge a sud e ovest dell’isola (Divi, Eagle beach). È un po’ un giorno corto perché siamo entrambi stanchi al mattino.

Le spiagge non deludono! Sabbia bianchissima e acqua cristallina. Oh e ovviamente non possono mancare gruppi di olandesi vestiti di arancione:

The last day on Aruba! As yesterday was bit of a short day, to it’s time for some serious swimming:

Starting in the very north west of the island on Arashi beach.

L’ultimo giorno ad Aruba! Poiché ieri è stata una giornata breve, è ora di fare un po’ di nuoto:

a partire dal nord-ovest dell’isola sulla spiaggia di Arashi.

It is like we dive into a fish tank! Many different fishes, schools of fishes, corals some squid…

È come immergersi in un acquario! Molti pesci diversi, scuole di pesci, coralli e calamari …

After saying goodbye to the fishes we continue our walk and end up at the Pelican spot (south of Arashi beach). It’s spectacular to see how the pelicans drop into the water from great heights to dive for the fishes.

Dopo aver salutato i pesci, continuiamo la nostra passeggiata e arriviamo alla zona dei pellicani (a sud della spiaggia di Arashi). È spettacolare vedere come i pellicani si lanciano nell’acqua da grandi altezze per pescare.

After the pelicans, we stop for a dive in Catalina cove for more snorkelling.

The last beach we visit is called “tres trapi” which is Papiamento for the three steps that lead to the sea. This beach is mainly rocks/dead coral. Not easy to walk on but the water is super clear and there are many starfish not too far from the shore (some feature in the video above)

Dopo i pellicani, ci fermiamo per un’immersione nella Catalina cove per un po’ di snorkeling.

L’ultima spiaggia che visitiamo è chiamata “tres trapi” che è papiamento e si riferisce ai tre gradini che portano al mare. Questa spiaggia è principalmente fatta di rocce / coralli morti e non è quindi semplice camminarci ma l’acqua è super trasparente e ci sono molte stelle marine non troppo lontane dalla riva (alcune sono nel video qui sopra)

At the end of all this diving the day is over and we are packing to prepare for our next stop, Curacao!
