After San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) we wanted to go to Uyuni (Bolivia).
There are two ways to do this:
- Go with the bus (in about 4-5 hours)
- Go with a 4X4 truck and cross the desert (in about 2.5 days)
Needless to say we took option 2 of course!
The biggest challenge is to find the right provider. There are many companies that offer this tour but reviews on TripAdvisor are mixed, with stories of drunk drivers, horrible groups etc. After doing quite some research we choose Cruz Andina. In hindsight that was a great choice!
Starting in a small van at 6:30 in the morning we drove to the border between Chile and Bolivia (hito Cajon).
The border opens at 8am on the Chilean side.
The Bolivian side also opens at 8am…. Bolivian time (which is 1 hour behind Chile) so time for breakfast in no man’s land!

Da San Pedro de Atacama (Cile) ci spostiamo a Uyuni (Bolivia).
Ci sono due modi per farlo:
- Autobus (in circa 4-5 ore)
- 4X4 attraversando il deserto (in circa 2,5 giorni)
Inutile dire che abbiamo scelto l’opzione 2, naturalmente!
La sfida più grande è trovare il giusto operatore. Ci sono molte agenzie che offrono questo tour, ma su Trip Advisor le recensioni sono le più disparate, con storie di guidatori ubriachi, gruppi orribili ecc. Dopo aver fatto un po’ di ricerche scegliamo Cruz Andina. Col senno di poi è stata una grande scelta!
Partiamo con un piccolo furgone alle 6:30 del mattino e arriviamo arrivati al confine tra Cile e Bolivia (hito Cajon) poco prima delle 8.
Il confine apre alle 8 sul lato cileno.
Il lato boliviano apre anch’esso alle 8 del mattino …. però ora boliviana (che è un’ora indietro rispetto al Cile), quindi abbiamo tempo per fare colazione nella terra di nessuno!
After this special border crossing we ended up directly in the national park, there is no way around it from this border crossing.
The first stop was Laguna Blanca, which as the name suggests, is a nice white lake.

Dopo questo speciale attraversamento, siamo finiti direttamente nel parco nazionale.
La prima tappa è stata Laguna Blanca, che come suggerisce il nome, è un bel lago bianco.
After a kilometre drive we arrived in the Laguna Verde (as the water is a bit more green – when it is more windy the water looks really green as the algae is moved around)

Dopo un chilometro siamo arrivati alla Laguna Verde (quando c’è più vento l’acqua sembra davvero verde a causa del movimento delle alghe)
Since we are in a vulcanic area we have to have a bath in one of the hotsprings, with the most amazing views!

Dato che siamo in un’area vulcanica, dobbiamo fare un bagno in una delle sorgenti termali, con una vista incredibile!
After swimming in thermal pools we saw some real vulcanic pools in all shades and colours (for some reason you are not tempted to bathe here)

Dopo aver nuotato in piscine termali abbiamo visto alcune vere piscine vulcaniche in tutte le sfumature e colori (chissà perché non ti viene proprio voglia di farti un bagno qui)

And our final stop for day 1: Laguna Colorada. Since we have been driving on what feels like broken porcelain for the whole day (with a lot of ups and downs) combined with the high altitude (we reached 5,000 m), we are not feeling at our best.

E la nostra ultima tappa per il primo giorno: Laguna Colorada. Dal momento che stiamo guidando tutto il giorno su terreno irregolare (con molti alti e bassi) combinata con l’alta quota ( il punto più alto raggiunto è stato 5,000 m), non ci sentiamo al meglio.
Time to get to our hostel, it still seems to be work in progress when we arrive… The roof is partially missing, luckily our room does have a roof.

Day 3: it’s an early day today with a 4:30 start to go from Colcha “k” to the Incahuasi island to see the sunrise.
Driving over the salt flats in the dark is impressive.

After the pictures we go to the original salt hotel which is completely made out of salt.
Twenty years ago it was closed, because there were too many tourists and with them the pollution coming to the hotel.
Right now it is a museum.

Dopo le foto andiamo nell’originale hotel di sale completamente fatto di sale.
Ha chiuso vent’anni fa, perché c’erano troppi turisti che generavano troppo inquinamento.
In questo momento è un museo.
Fun thing to see is that the alternative Paris Dakar rally was held here in 2014/2016 and that the legacy of this rally is still very much alive.

La cosa divertente da vedere è che l’alternativa del rally di Parigi Dakar si è tenuta qui nel 2014/2016 e che l’eredità di questo rally è ancora molto viva.
The last stop of the trip is the train cemetery. A bizarre place in the outskirts of Uyuni. At some point the Bolivians replaced their steam trains, like the rest of the world, with diesel trains.
Unlike the rest of the world, they dumped their trains in Uyuni. Till the day if today these half broken trains are just standing there rusting away.
It’s a mistery to us why these trains are not scrapped/restored…

L’ultima tappa del viaggio è il cimitero del treno. Un posto bizzarro alla periferia di Uyuni. Ad un certo punto i boliviani hanno sostituito i loro treni a vapore, come il resto del mondo, con treni diesel.
A differenza del resto del mondo, hanno scaricato i loro treni a Uyuni. Fino al giorno in cui oggi questi treni a mezzi rotti sono rimasti lì ad arrugginire.
È un mistero per noi perché questi treni non sono rottamati / restaurati …
Finally,this was an amazing 3 days in the desert with sights that we have never seen before and are unlikely to see again any time soon.
The people we shared the car with and the driver were really great and I am convinced that travel companions can make or break the trip.
All accomodation, the car, the food was top notch. We read many stories about things that went wrong for other people on these trips. But our trip really was a great experience.

Infine, sono stati 3 giorni fantastici nel deserto con panorami che non abbiamo mai visto prima e difficilmente ci rivedremo presto.
Le persone con le quali abbiamo condiviso la macchina e l’autista erano davvero fantastici e sono convinto che i compagni di viaggio siano determinanti per il successo del viaggio.
Tutte le sistemazioni, l’auto, il cibo è stato di qualità. Abbiamo letto molte storie su cose che sono andate storte per altre persone in questi viaggi. Ma il nostro viaggio é stato davvero una grande esperienza.
